Chinese banks, telcos and cafes are bundling AI compute tokens into credit card perks, mobile plans and free promotions, treating tokens, the basic units of text or data an AI model processes, as a new everyday consumer currency similar to mobile data. In July, AI startup Moonshot launched a credit card named after its Kimi model in partnership with the Agricultural Bank of China and American Express, letting users earn token rewards through spending, while China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile have all rolled out token subscription packages starting as low as 9.9 yuan a month for casual users

Analyst Poe Zhao told Rest of World this represents a supply-led experiment, since most ordinary users still encounter AI through an app or feature without ever seeing an actual token balance, meaning businesses are essentially trying to create consumer demand for a unit most people don't naturally think about. The strategy is enabled by Chinese open-source models being 60 to 90 percent cheaper than comparable offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic, letting businesses experiment with pricing and bundling in ways that would be much less profitable using pricier frontier models

Government officials reportedly see this token economy partly as a way of bringing China's inland provinces into the broader AI economy, treating tokens as a foundational resource comparable to electricity or water. Curious what people think about this specific commercialization strategy, does bundling AI compute into everyday financial products actually drive meaningful adoption, or does it just create confusing new billing units nobody asked for
