Funding is definitely the sticking point, but it is not just about total capital, it is about patient capital. Robotics takes longer to commercialize than software, and UK investors have not always been comfortable with that timeline.

There is a strong research base here though. Universities like Imperial, Cambridge, and Bristol are producing serious work in robotics and control systems.

The gap is turning that into scaled companies rather than early exits. Too often the tech gets acquired before it matures into a global player.

If that changes, the UK could punch above its weight :)

The funding comment is fair, but it can also become a bit of a catch-all excuse. There is capital in the UK, it is just often allocated differently.

A lot flows into fintech or SaaS because returns are faster and easier to model. Robotics requires a different mindset that not all investors are comfortable with.

Until then, it remains a tougher sell compared to lighter, software-driven ventures :(

Urban delivery robots, inspection drones, and maintenance systems could all find practical use cases here.

If companies can demonstrate reliability in those conditions, it becomes a powerful export story.

That kind of grounded progress might matter more than chasing flashy concepts :)

Feels like the conversation always swings between "we could lead" and "we will miss the boat again." Reality is probably somewhere in between.

The UK might not dominate globally, but it can still build meaningful clusters of expertise in certain subfields.

Success does not have to mean being number one everywhere. It can mean being indispensable in a few key areas.

That is a more achievable and arguably more sustainable goal 8)
