For a genuinely free option, I would start with Google News. The useful bit is not the front page but the ability to follow topics and sources, then skim several outlets covering the same story. It is simple, fast, and good enough for most people.

The downside is that the ranking can feel a little too tailored, so I would occasionally check the full coverage rather than trusting the first three headlines. That is where a traditional feed reader can still win.
