The Verge is reporting ahead of WWDC 2026 (opening June 8 at Apple Park) that Apple's headline announcement will be a completely rebuilt Siri powered by a custom version of Google's Gemini technology. Apple and Google confirmed a multi-year collaboration in January 2026 valued at approximately $1 billion per year. The rebuilt Siri will run through Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure rather than Google's servers directly, maintaining Apple's privacy commitments. No user data is shared with Google.

Expected features in iOS 27: full conversational chatbot with web search, image generation, content summarisation, multi-step command execution across apps, a new gesture-based activation through the Dynamic Island, on-screen understanding and a standalone Siri app with conversation history. Third-party AI services including Claude and ChatGPT can also be handed off to if installed on the device. This is Tim Cook's final WWDC as CEO.

Here comes new Siri again

This is the most significant thing Apple has announced since the original App Store and nobody is saying that loudly enough. Rebuilding Siri from scratch on a foundation model with genuine conversational capability puts 1.4 billion iPhones into the frontier AI assistant market overnight. The scale is unlike anything OpenAI or Anthropic can currently reach

The Google Gemini partnership is a stunning admission from Apple that their own internal AI research was not competitive. They had the data, the hardware, the on-device compute advantage and the user base. They still chose to license from Google rather than ship something inferior. That is the correct decision but it is a remarkable one for a company that built its identity on vertical integration

Private Cloud Compute running the Gemini model on Apple-controlled infrastructure is a technical and commercial compromise that manages to serve both companies' interests. Apple keeps its privacy narrative intact. Google gets 1.4 billion devices as a distribution channel for Gemini without being visible to the end user

Siri being opened to third-party handoff to Claude or ChatGPT is the decision that will matter most for the competitive dynamics of the AI assistant market. Apple is acknowledging that one model will not always be the best choice and building in optionality. That is good for users and very good for companies like Anthropic

The Dynamic Island gesture activation is the interface change that will feel most natural to users. The always-listening paradigm was always going to be the long-term destination for AI assistants on mobile. Anchoring it to a visible hardware element makes the always-on aspect feel deliberate rather than surveillance-adjacent
