Alongside all the export control drama, Anthropic launched a grant program through Claude Science, its new dedicated research application. Up to 50 projects get as much as 30,000 dollars in Claude API credits each, with Modal chipping in up to 2,000 dollars of compute for selected projects. Applications close July 15 with projects running September through December

The stated bar is projects that explore the boundaries of science with AI and show genuine novelty beyond existing AI assisted research, with an early emphasis on biology and biomedical work. Given the OpenAI results this year on rare pediatric disease diagnosis, the AI for science lane is clearly where labs want their flagship success stories to come from

Let us be honest about the shape of this though, it is a marketing program as much as a philanthropy program. Credits cost Anthropic a fraction of face value, the winning projects become case studies, and 50 research groups get onboarded to the ecosystem. None of which makes it bad, most useful things in this industry are three incentives in a trenchcoat

The July 15 deadline is brutal for anyone with a serious proposal, twelve days from announcement to close is grant writing at startup speed. Anyone here in a lab actually planning to apply, and what would you even pitch with a three month window?
