Job seekers increasingly use AI tools to mass apply to hundreds of postings at once, prompting employers to deploy harsher AI screening filters to manage the resulting flood, which in turn pushes desperate applicants to apply to even more jobs, a self-reinforcing cycle Greenhouse CEO Daniel Chait has publicly called a doom loop. Chait put it plainly, we've got this tragic situation where each side has a problem, they're using AI to solve their own problem, but in ways that make the problem worse, and more AI use begets more AI use, to no one's benefit

Job applications have grown roughly four times faster than actual job openings, with LinkedIn logging spikes of over 11,000 submissions per minute platform-wide during peak periods, making genuine signal increasingly hard to find in the noise. Gartner projects that by 2028, roughly one in four job candidates globally could be fake, AI-generated profiles with fabricated resumes, cloned voices and deepfaked video sitting through interviews that were never a real person to begin with

Greenhouse has tried a partial fix called My Dream Job, letting a job seeker flag just one role per month across every company on the platform as their genuine top priority, betting that scarcity of that specific signal forces real intent employers can actually trust. Curious what people think could realistically break this cycle, is there any fix that doesn't just get gamed by AI on the other side within a few months
