A brain-computer interface, or BCI, is a system that reads electrical activity from the brain and translates it into commands an external device can act on. Neurons communicate with each other by firing tiny electrical signals across gaps called synapses, and a BCI works by placing extremely thin electrodes near these neurons to detect that firing activity, then using software to interpret the resulting patterns as an intended action, like moving a cursor or controlling a robotic arm

Neuralink, the company founded by Elon Musk, has drawn the most public attention with its coin sized implant called the Link, which uses ultra-thin, flexible electrode threads fanned out into the brain to record neural signals with unusual precision. The FDA approved human trials for the device in 2023, and since then, participants including individuals with paralysis have used it to control computers, play simple games, and in at least one case, operate a robotic arm using thought alone, all communicated wirelessly to an external device

The underlying concept is not actually new, BCI research traces back to work at UCLA in the early 1970s, and Neuralink is not the only company in this space, competitors including Precision Neuroscience and Synchron are pursuing similar goals with different technical approaches. The current focus for essentially all of these companies remains medical, restoring communication and device control to people with severe paralysis or neurological conditions, though the technology's long term ambitions, and the ethical questions around implanting hardware directly into a living brain, extend well beyond that immediate medical use case
