Every music fan has a favourite artist with at least one song they cannot stand. It might be a big hit that was played to death, an awkward experiment, a ballad that drags on too long or a filler track that ruins an otherwise perfect album. You love the artist, but your thumb hovers over the skip button every time it comes on

Sometimes the skipped song is one of the artist's most famous tracks, which makes it even more controversial. Overplayed hits can lose their magic after the hundredth time on the radio. Other times, it is an album track that feels out of place. Some fans skip songs because of the memories attached to them, rather than the music itself

Mine is a famous Christmas single by a band I otherwise adore. I have heard it in every supermarket, office party and taxi from November to January for twenty years. I cannot hear it without picturing tinsel and queues. The rest of their catalogue is brilliant
