Alphabet is building its own in-house quantum computing capability specifically to avoid being dependent on paying premium prices for someone else's hardware the way it currently does for Nvidia's GPUs, and its Willow chip has demonstrated what the company describes as verifiable quantum advantage on an algorithm with potential applications in drug discovery and materials design, alongside separately identified algorithms relevant to breaking cryptographic encryption

Nvidia's approach is notably different, the company is explicitly not building its own quantum processor, instead launching tools like NVQLink and an AI model aimed at improving quantum error correction, plus updated CUDA software supporting quantum operations, betting that traditional accelerated computing and quantum hardware end up working side by side rather than one replacing the other. IonQ is the only pure play among the three, meaning it has no other business line funding the company, drawing its capital purely from client revenue and fundraising. It currently holds the record for two-qubit gate fidelity, a widely used accuracy measure for quantum hardware, which the piece frames as a meaningful technical lead in one specific area quantum computing still struggles with broadly. That pure play status cuts both ways, it offers the most direct exposure to quantum computing's eventual success but also carries the most risk if the underlying technology or the company specifically fails to commercialize on the timeline investors are currently pricing in
