Roth IRAs and traditional 401ks get recommended as the default retirement savings vehicles depending on who's giving the advice, and the actual best choice genuinely depends on assumptions about your current versus future tax bracket that nobody can predict with real certainty. Roth contributions get taxed now but grow and withdraw completely tax free later, while traditional contributions reduce your taxable income now but get taxed upon withdrawal in retirement. This isn't financial advice, just discussing the general strategy debate people have around this choice. Curious what people think actually makes the better default recommendation for someone without a strong specific reason to prefer one over the other

The case for Roth usually centers on the belief that tax rates will likely rise over time and that paying tax now while rates are known beats an uncertain future tax bill. The case for traditional usually comes down to the immediate tax deduction being genuinely valuable now, especially for people in a higher tax bracket currently than they expect to be in retirement. Worth remembering nobody here is a licensed financial advisor and individual circumstances vary enormously on this specific decision

What's actually shaped your own choice here, and why. Genuinely curious how people are weighing current versus future tax assumptions

Went with Roth specifically because I'm early in my career and genuinely expect to be in a higher tax bracket later, making paying tax now at a lower rate the more sensible bet for my specific situation. Wouldn't necessarily make the same choice if I were already in peak earning years though. Depends heavily on where you actually are in your specific career trajectory
