Running a genuine no spend month challenge here. Thirty days of essentials only spending, groceries, bills, and anything genuinely necessary stay fair game, but everything discretionary, takeout, impulse purchases, subscriptions you don't actually use, gets paused for the full month.

Post your own specific rules for what counts as essential before you start. Since that genuinely varies by person and situation, then check in weekly with how it's actually going, what's been surprisingly easy, and what's been genuinely harder to resist than expected.

The actual point here isn't permanent deprivation. It's building real awareness of where money quietly leaks out through small habitual purchases that never individually feel significant but genuinely add up over a full month when you actually track them.

If you slip up partway through. That's honestly fine, note it, learn from whatever specifically triggered it, and keep going rather than treating one slip as a reason to abandon the whole month entirely.

Post your own essential versus discretionary rules below and let's actually see what everyone learns about their own real spending habits over these thirty days together

One thing I'm unsure about, do things like a haircut or necessary car maintenance count as essential.

Or is the actual line meant to be drawn more strictly than that? Never really thought about it that way before
VAR can do one

This has my attention, my takeout spending specifically has quite gotten out of hand the past few months without me really noticing until I actually added it up. Good point either way

The don't abandon after one slip advice is exactly right. Quit a similar challenge once after a single bad day instead of just particularly getting back on track the next morning

Needed exactly this exactly this kind of reset for a while now. My spending has clearly crept up without me actually tracking it closely enough to notice

Dropping my own rules now, groceries and bills stay.

But literally everything else including my streaming subscriptions gets paused for the full thirty days

Building real awareness rather than permanent deprivation is the right framing.

This should really teach something lasting rather than just being thirty days of pure white knuckling it through

Keeping an eye on this thread. And cheering everyone on, already fairly disciplined with my own spending but curious to see what specific habits other people actually uncover

The weekly check in structure is what will keep me accountable here. Private financial goals are so easy to quietly abandon the moment nobody's actually watching. Held up better than I expected
It's not a bug, it's a feature

Thirty days feels quite doable with clear rules set in advance.

The vague ones are always what trip people up mid challenge when a gray area purchase comes up

Is there going to be some kind of final reflection thread at the end where everyone shares what they actually learned about their own specific spending patterns?

Held up well
