The wallet weighs more than the savings, or does it, time for the loyalty scheme audit. Report your honest position, the schemes you actively work, the ones you carry but ignore, and whether anyone has ever actually done the arithmetic on hours of faff versus value returned, because the arithmetic is the entire question

The two camps as they exist in every household, the optimisers who stack points and time redemptions with genuine skill and provably extract real holidays and hundreds in value, and the sceptics who note the schemes exist because the data is worth more than the biscuit, the discounts are increasingly just the old price wearing a members badge, and the psychological pull of points changes what you buy in ways you do not clock

The middle position deserves a hearing too, take the automatic savings on things you were buying anyway, refuse every behavioural nudge, never travel a metre or add an item for points, treat the card as a coupon and the app as a spy you have decided to tolerate, this is probably most people and nobody writes articles about them

Audit questions for the receipts, your best ever redemption in real terms, the moment a scheme visibly tried to change your behaviour and whether it worked, and the privacy corner, does the data trade actually bother you in practice or only in threads like this one

Optimiser receipts as demanded, one household, three years of disciplined stacking on groceries and fuel we were buying regardless, redeemed for flights that priced at several hundred, the hours invested were maybe twenty total, that is a decent hourly rate for tapping a card

Sceptic receipts in response, the members price phenomenon in my regular shop is now just the price, the non member number is a fiction printed to create gratitude, you are not saving, you are avoiding a fine for privacy

Tracey49

Avoiding a fine for privacy is the phrase this debate has needed for a decade

Behaviour change confession as invited, a coffee app's ninth stamp made me buy a coffee I did not want on a street I do not usually walk down, stood there holding the evidence, deleted the app that week, the biscuit does not pay for the leash
I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong ;)

Middle position representative and proud, automatic savings accepted, nudges refused, the app notifications permanently silenced on day one, extracting value from a system while declining its psychology is a normal adult stance and I agree nobody writes about us because we are boring and correct

RomanReigns

Privacy corner honesty, it bothers me in threads and evaporates at the till, the discount is now and the data harm is abstract and later, which the schemes understand better than their members do, that asymmetry IS the business model

Dragon49

Best redemption story for balance, points quietly accumulated by my late mother across fifteen years of shopping, discovered and redeemed by the family for the wake catering, the scheme achieved unexpected poetry and I have been unable to fully hate it since
sudo make me a sandwich

The wake catering entry just complicated everyone's position and that is what audits are for

The arithmetic almost nobody does, tried it properly once, my second tier schemes returned under one percent for measurable admin and app friction, culled everything but the big two, value went UP because attention is also a currency and I had been overspending it

Amber90

Attention is also a currency deserves its own thread, half of personal finance is guarding the wallet and the other half is guarding the noticing

Audit verdict assembling, the optimisers provably win when disciplined, the fiction prices are real, the ninth stamp is a leash, the boring middle is the population, and one scheme accidentally catered a wake, the arithmetic remains undone by almost everyone which is the truest finding of all
