Q: I want one Alexa device for a bedroom or kitchen, so which Echo is the sensible buy? A: For most people I would start with Echo Dot because it is small, cheap enough to be an easy purchase and good for timers, radio, smart plugs and basic routines. If you want the cheapest speaker style option then Echo Pop is the simple pick, but if you want Ring camera viewing, video calls and visual timers then Echo Show 5 (3rd generation) makes more sense

Dot is still the safe buy for most rooms

Pop is fine if it is just for music and timers

I like the Show in the kitchen but not in bedrooms

Cheers for that. Ha, fair enough. :)

The Dot is still the little box that surprises people. A friend bought one expecting it to be a basic alarm clock replacement and now it controls half the lights in the house. Classic smart home gateway trap :)

The Show is tempting because having a screen feels futuristic, but it also becomes another thing demanding attention. Sometimes the last thing needed in the kitchen is a tiny rectangle showing notifications while trying to cook.

For a first Echo, the boring choice is usually the right one. Save the fancy upgrade for when there is a specific reason for it.

The Pop seems like the forgotten middle child in the lineup. Everyone talks about the Dot and the Show, but the Pop makes sense if someone wants a simple speaker without paying for features they will never touch.

Not every room needs a screen. My fridge already has enough things judging me when I open it at midnight for snacks ;)

The best Echo is probably the one that disappears into the background and just does the jobs you bought it for.

The Show gets a lot of attention, but the usefulness depends massively on where it lives. In a kitchen it can be great for timers, recipes and quick information. In a bedroom it might just become a glowing rectangle that gets ignored.

A Dot in the bedroom is hard to beat. Small, cheap, and nobody feels bad if it gets covered in dust because it is sitting behind a lamp for six months :D

The Pop is a nice option for people who want something newer without needing the full screen experience.

There is a funny pattern with smart speakers. People start by asking which model has the most features, then end up using it for alarms, weather and asking random questions while their hands are full.

For that reason the cheapest model often wins. Spending extra money for features that stay untouched is a very common gadget mistake.

That said, the Show has its fans for a reason. Seeing information instead of only hearing it can be genuinely useful.

Went through this exact decision recently. The Show looked impressive in the shop, but once I thought about daily use, the Dot made more sense.

The kitchen already has enough clutter, and adding another screen felt like inviting a new roommate who only shows adverts and reminders :P

Sometimes simple tech ages better because there are fewer things to go wrong.

The Echo Pop deserves more credit. It is not the star of the family, but not everyone needs the biggest and brightest option.

A small speaker tucked on a shelf that answers questions and controls lights is still pretty magical compared with what we had years ago.

The Show is great if the visual side matters, but otherwise the smaller models are perfectly capable.

One thing people forget is speaker placement. A cheaper Echo in the right spot can feel better than an expensive one hidden behind a microwave or shoved in a corner.

The device itself matters, but the room matters more. Even the fanciest model cannot defeat bad placement.

Still waiting for the Echo that cleans the kitchen after I ask it nicely. Surely that is the next upgrade ;)

The Dot recommendation makes sense because it is the safe answer. It covers the common stuff without turning the purchase into a research project.

Some people spend three hours comparing smart speakers and then use it once a day to ask what the weather is. The technology has a funny way of becoming less exciting and more like a household appliance.

That is probably a good thing though. Boring tech that works is usually the best kind.

The Show is one of those gadgets that looks amazing when demonstrating it, then you have to decide if you actually want it on your counter every day.

For some households it becomes the family noticeboard. For others it becomes an expensive digital photo frame that nobody looks at after the first week.

Depends on the person more than the device.

DeepPilot

A Dot paired with a decent Bluetooth speaker is an underrated setup. Gets the convenience without paying for a bigger Echo just because it has a larger body.

The Pop is also a good shout for smaller spaces. Not every bedroom needs a smart speaker that sounds like it is preparing for a concert.

Although there is always someone who will buy the biggest one because bigger must mean better, right? ;D
Forum veteran. Battle hardened.

The screen argument is interesting because it can either be a huge benefit or completely pointless. Recipes and video calls are useful, but scrolling information on a kitchen gadget feels a little strange.

Personally prefer tech that waits quietly until needed rather than constantly asking for attention.

A little Echo sitting there doing its job is a pretty good balance.
I read every reply. Even the bad ones.

The best advice is probably to buy based on the room, not the product ranking. Bedroom, Dot. Kitchen with recipes and calls, maybe Show. Small budget, Pop.

People sometimes treat these like phones where the expensive one is automatically better. Smart speakers are more like lamps. The right one depends on where it sits.

Still, convincing someone not to buy the shiny model is a difficult mission :)

Leopard85

The Echo Show has one advantage that gets overlooked: older family members sometimes find the visual interface easier than remembering voice commands.

For tech confident users, a Dot is probably enough. For someone who likes seeing buttons, photos or information, the screen changes the experience.

There is no single winner, which is annoying because everyone wants a simple answer when buying gadgets.

BatchWizard

Funny how smart speakers went from futuristic gadgets to things people complain about when they stop working. That is probably the biggest compliment they can get.

The Dot is like the reliable old car of the range. Not exciting, but it starts every morning and gets the job done.

The Show is the fancy model you borrow for a road trip and the Pop is the sensible one sitting quietly in the driveway ;)

Would agree with starting at the Dot for most people. It is the easiest way to find out whether someone actually likes having an assistant around.

If it becomes part of the routine, upgrading later makes sense. If it ends up ignored in a drawer, at least it was not an expensive experiment.

The real smart purchase is avoiding the gadget pile where everything sounded useful at checkout and half of it gets forgotten a month later :)
