We all make bad purchases. Sometimes it is a gadget that looked amazing in a review but turned out to be useless in real life. Sometimes it is something we bought in a moment of excitement and never used. And sometimes it is an expensive upgrade that turned out to be barely better than what we had

My worst was a smart fridge camera that let me check what was inside my fridge from the shop. In theory, brilliant. In practice, the photos were blurry, the app crashed constantly and I only remembered to check it twice. It ended up in a drawer within a month

Other common regrets seem to be 3D TVs, VR headsets used once, fitness trackers abandoned after a fortnight and premium phones bought on finance. Smart home gadgets that stopped working when the company went bust are another category. Some people regret expensive cameras they never learned to use properly. Hype cycles catch everyone out eventually

There is a lesson in these stories about separating what we think we will do from what we end up doing. I keep telling myself I will use a gadget more once I have it. That has rarely been true

What tech purchase do you regret most? And what did you learn from it?
