Expensive gadgets get most of the attention, but some of the most useful tech in my house cost less than a takeaway. Cheap does not always mean bad. Sometimes a simple, well designed gadget solves an everyday problem better than something costing hundreds. I would like to build a list of the best budget finds

My pick would be a plug in smart socket that cost about £10. It lets me schedule lamps, turn off chargers overnight and control the heater from my phone. It has saved me far more than it cost. Another favourite is a cheap USB rechargeable head torch, which has been brilliant for power cuts, camping and searching behind the sofa

Other contenders I have heard about include magnetic cable holders, Bluetooth trackers, digital meat thermometers, USB-C power banks and phone stands. Even basic items like a decent HDMI cable or a small screwdriver set can make a big difference. Some of the best purchases are the boring ones. Price is no guide to usefulness

The rules are simple. It must cost under £20 when you bought it, or be available for that now, and you must use it regularly. Bonus points if it has outlasted far more expensive tech

What is your best cheap gadget? And has anything cheap ever disappointed you badly?
