Smartwatches promised to change how we use technology, tracking our health, delivering notifications and reducing how often we pull out our phones. For many people, they have become essential. For others, the novelty wore off after a few months, and the watch now sits in a drawer with a flat battery. the forum is probably split

Fans love fitness tracking, sleep data, contactless payments and quick replies to messages. Some features can be life changing, like fall detection and heart rhythm alerts. Battery life has improved, and there are now options from Apple, Samsung, Google, Garmin and many others, plus simpler fitness bands and smart rings

Critics find them distracting, uncomfortable or simply unnecessary. Charging another device every day or two is a hassle, and constant notifications on your wrist can feel worse than on your phone. Some people go back to traditional watches because they prefer the look or the simplicity

I wore a smartwatch every day for three years, mainly for running. Then I went on holiday, left the charger at home and realised I did not miss it. It has been in a drawer ever since, and I wear an old analogue watch instead

Is your smartwatch still on your wrist, or has it been retired to a drawer? What made the difference?
The truth is usually more entangled than the headline
