Apple is expected to unveil an OLED iPad mini later this month, and a new rumour says it will be missing one key feature, 9to5Mac reports. According to the claim, the screen will stay at 60Hz and will not get ProMotion, Apple's 120Hz display technology. This is the second time the claim has surfaced, both times from the same Naver account, yeux1122. 9to5Mac's Chance Miller treats it with plenty of caution

Miller says the account often seems to repeat information from unnamed sources rather than provide its own, and has a mixed track record. The latest post says there is mention of 120Hz in some overseas sources. It then claims that domestic production volume has already confirmed a 60Hz panel. No reliable source has backed that up

The rest of the expected specs sound good. There is the OLED display itself, the A20 Pro chip replacing the A17 Pro, slimmer bezels that might improve water resistance and a FaceTime camera moved to the landscape edge. That last change is overdue, since video calls with the camera on the short side are awkward. The A20 Pro would be a big jump in performance

Miller calls the lack of ProMotion a disappointing limitation for iPad mini buyers. He says it would sour the launch, and I think he is right. ProMotion has been on the iPad Pro for years, and even the standard iPhone got a 120Hz screen last year. Putting a fancy OLED panel in and then capping it at 60Hz would feel like a strange compromise

On the other hand, Apple has a history of keeping features back to separate its product lines. The iPad Air has gone without ProMotion for years while the Pro had it. A 60Hz OLED mini would still be a big step up in contrast and colour from the current LCD. It just would not feel as smooth as it should

Would a 60Hz screen put you off an OLED iPad mini? And how much do you trust rumours from accounts like yeux1122?
