Apple's upcoming touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro will be "significantly lighter" than current models, Engadget reports, citing Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The weight saving reportedly comes from "Apple reworking the laptop's interiors by miniaturizing parts and rearranging components." For comparison, today's 14 inch MacBook Pro weighs 3.4 pounds and the 16 inch weighs 4.7 pounds. Touchscreen Macs have been rumoured for years, and Apple long resisted the idea

The new model will reportedly use existing M5 chips rather than the upcoming M7. Engadget says "the touchscreen MacBook Pro with OLED should be coming out next month, alongside the first iPad mini to similarly feature OLED." OLED screens offer deeper blacks and better contrast than the mini LED panels on current MacBook Pros, and they can be thinner, which helps with weight

The report places the laptop within a wider design push under Apple's new chief executive John Ternus, who Gurman notes has "previous experience as a hardware engineer." According to the report, "one of the CEO's first priorities was to rebuild its design teams, which also now report directly to Ternus." That would make this one of the first big hardware launches of his time in charge

A touchscreen MacBook would be a big change in Apple's thinking. For years the company argued that touchscreens do not belong on laptops, partly because reaching up to touch a screen is tiring and partly to protect the iPad. Windows laptops have offered touchscreens for over a decade with mixed results. Whether Mac users want one is an open question

Would you use a touchscreen on a MacBook? And does a lighter MacBook Pro matter more to you than a faster chip?
