Qualcomm is pushing back against reports that its newest flagship chip runs too hot. 9to5Google's Ben Schoon reports that a Qualcomm spokesperson called the thermal reports inaccurate, and said the company works closely with phone makers around the world

The reports came from Korea, where outlets claimed Samsung was in talks with Qualcomm about overheating in the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Some suggested Samsung might switch to its own Exynos 2700 for future Galaxy phones as a result. Neither claim has been confirmed

Qualcomm's chief marketing officer Don McGuire also posted on X that there are no systemic thermal issues. He said it is normal for phone makers to tune their software at launch, which can affect how hot a device runs in the first weeks

The chip was announced on 22 September and includes two cores running at 5GHz, which is very fast for a phone. Confirmed devices include the Motorola Signature 27, Xiaomi 18, Redmagic 12 Pro Plus, Honor Magic 9 Pro Max and OnePlus 16. We discussed rumours of phones getting built in cooling fans recently, which fits the wider picture of chips running hotter

Flagship chips have had heat problems before, so the reports are not surprising. Real world testing from independent reviewers will settle this. Until then, it is one set of anonymous claims against a firm denial

Do you think phones are pushing performance too far? And would heat problems change which phone you buy?
