Phones have become eye wateringly expensive, yet many are replaced every two or three years. Batteries wear out, screens crack and software support ends. A phone designed to be repaired and supported for ten years sounds appealing, with replaceable batteries and easy to source parts. The question is whether people would pay extra for it

Fairphone has been trying this for years, and EU rules are pushing manufacturers towards longer support and easier battery replacement. Apple and Samsung now offer seven years of updates on some models. But a phone that lasts ten years would need to stay fast and secure for all that time, which is a big ask

There is a cost argument too. Paying more upfront could still save money if you replace your phone less often. The environmental case is strong as well, since manufacturing a new phone has a large carbon footprint

Would you pay more for a phone built to last a decade? How much extra would be reasonable, and would you miss upgrading to the latest model?

My Fairphone is already on year six and still going strong with a swapped battery. Proof it can be done, just needs more companies to follow suit instead of chasing ever-thinner designs.
