Google has started rolling out a new firmware update for its Pixel Buds, Android Central reports. The update, labelled release_6.144, covers the Pixel Buds Pro 2 as well as the Pixel Buds Pro and Pixel Buds 2a. It adds several features rather than just bug fixes. Free upgrades like this are one of the nicer parts of owning Google hardware

The headline change is deeper Gemini voice control. Gemini can now change EQ, noise cancelling and other settings by voice. Android Central says the integration goes much deeper than the earlier version, which could only control volume. Being able to say switch on noise cancelling without reaching for your phone is useful

There is also a new Dynamic ANC feature, which automatically adjusts noise cancellation based on how well the earbuds are sealed. Tap to mute lets you tap the earbuds to mute or unmute your microphone on calls. A sleep pause feature works with a paired Pixel Watch. When the watch detects you have fallen asleep, the earbuds pause media, disable touch gestures and silence notifications

Live Translate gets an upgrade too. A gesture on the earbuds now starts translation without taking your phone out, with smoother Google Translate integration. If you want to update manually, the path is More Settings, then Firmware, then Check for updates. As always with Google rollouts, it may take a while to reach everyone

Separately, Amazon in the US is selling the Pixel Buds Pro 2 for $170.05, down from $229. UK pricing was not mentioned, so check before getting excited. The sleep pause feature is my favourite on the list, because falling asleep with a podcast still playing is a habit I need to break. It is a small touch that shows Google thinking about how people use these

Has the update reached your Pixel Buds yet? And which of the new features would you use most?
