Nothing Phone 4b is here and it is a genuinely tough sell next to its own sibling

[ArmandoCardoso]

Nothing launched the Phone 4b on July 7 alongside the Nothing Ear 3a earbuds, positioning it as a cheaper entry point below the existing Phone 4a rather than reviving the CMF budget sub brand

Specs land solidly mid range, a 6.77 inch 120Hz AMOLED display, Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset, 8GB of RAM, 128 or 256GB of storage, and a 5,200mAh battery that jumps to 6,000mAh in the Indian market specifically

The transparent design and Glyph Bar notification lights carry over from the rest of the lineup, and reviewers note the blue colourway in particular looks genuinely excellent in person, arguably one of the nicest finishes Nothing has ever shipped

The problem is pricing, at 299 pounds it sits just 50 pounds below the Phone 4a, which has three rear cameras including a telephoto lens, a sharper display, a faster chip, and better water resistance, making the 4a the objectively better buy for almost the exact same money

Nothing itself has publicly acknowledged this awkward positioning was forced by what the industry is calling RAMageddon, the same memory price spike squeezing every hardware maker right now, and the company recently cancelled a planned CMF device for the same reason

Hands-on: Nothing Phone (4b) is a better budget phone at an impossible price [Video]9to5google.com

A phone that is hard to recommend purely because its own sibling is a better deal at almost the same price is a strange position for a company to end up in

[MattHardy]

The blue colourway sounds gorgeous based on the description, curious to see actual photos once more reviews land

[BookerT]

Nothing being upfront about RAMageddon forcing this awkward pricing is honestly refreshing, most companies would just quietly hope nobody noticed the overlap

[NovaPrime90]

No US release again is disappointing, Nothing's lineup keeps getting more interesting but American buyers are stuck waiting on the Phone 4a Pro as the cheapest option

[Scholar95]

This feels like a phone that only makes sense once the Phone 4a gets discontinued or has a price hike, right now it is just competing with itself for no good reason

[Edward71]

Glyph lights trimmed from seven segments to five is a small but noticeable downgrade, curious if that was purely cost driven or a genuine design choice

[Lion15]

I actually respect Nothing walking back the lockscreen ads that plagued the previous budget model, that was a bad look for the brand

[Sinead]

Memory prices wrecking budget phone positioning across the entire industry is going to be a recurring story for the rest of the year at this rate

Three years of OS updates and six years of security patches on a budget phone is still solid value even if the hardware trade offs sting a little

[BlackPanther34]

The biggest problem with the 4b seems less like the hardware itself and more like the pricing relationship with the 4a. A cheaper phone can make sense when it is clearly aimed at a different buyer, but if the gap is small enough that people keep thinking about the better sibling, the cheaper model starts to feel like the awkward middle child.

That is especially true for buyers who keep a phone for several years. Saving a little upfront is less compelling if you spend the entire ownership period wishing you had taken the slightly better display, camera, or processor.

The six years of security support does help the argument, though. A budget phone that remains reasonably secure for that long is much easier to recommend to someone who does not care about having the newest hardware every year.

[GreenEcho]

The software support point deserves more credit than it is getting. Three years of OS updates plus six years of security patches is a much more meaningful budget-phone feature than another tiny camera improvement.

For a parent, teenager, or someone who simply wants a phone that works, long security support can matter more than benchmark numbers. If the 4b is still receiving security patches when several more expensive phones have become forgotten about, that changes the value calculation considerably.

The catch is that the hardware still has to be good enough to remain pleasant during those years. Longevity is only valuable if the phone does not feel ancient halfway through the support window.

[ElPresidente]

There is a weird psychological trap here: cheaper does not automatically mean better value. If the 4a costs only a little more but gives you noticeably better hardware, the extra money is effectively buying several years of fewer compromises.

That said, people should not be shamed into buying the more expensive model. Someone who mostly uses messaging, maps, banking, YouTube, and a camera in daylight may never notice the difference that matters to reviewers.

The right comparison is not which phone wins the spec sheet. It is which phone gives a particular buyer enough performance without paying for features they will never use.

[SockPuppet]

The camera trade-off is probably where I would spend the most time before buying. Budget phones have gotten remarkably good at producing nice-looking photos in ideal daylight, but difficult lighting is where the savings usually become obvious.

Take a family dinner in a dim restaurant. That is the kind of shot where processing, stabilization, autofocus, and sensor quality suddenly matter. If your typical photography is mostly outdoor snapshots and social media, the 4b may be perfectly fine. If you photograph kids, pets, or nighttime scenes constantly, the sibling model starts looking more attractive.

[Outlaw56]

Performance is another area where people can get distracted by benchmark charts. A phone does not need to win every synthetic test to feel fast in normal use.

What matters more is how it behaves after two years of accumulated apps, updates, photos, and background processes. If the 4b stays responsive while doing ordinary tasks, that is a better sign for a budget buyer than a headline score that looks impressive for five minutes.

Still, there is a limit. If the processor is already noticeably weaker today, expecting it to age gracefully for six years is a tougher bet. That is where the sibling comparison becomes important.

[Sharon_77]

The design philosophy is what makes the situation interesting. Nothing has always been good at making relatively ordinary phone hardware feel distinctive, so the 4b does not need to be the fastest device around to have an identity.

But distinctive design only carries you so far. Once you are holding the phone every day, little things like haptics, brightness, speakers, thermals, charging speed, and camera consistency become more important than how cool it looked in the launch photos.

A flashy back can win the first five minutes. Good ergonomics win the next three years.

[SpikeDudley]

One thing I would check before calling this a bad deal is the actual price gap after discounts. Launch pricing is rarely the whole story with phones.

If retailers start discounting the 4b aggressively while the 4a stays near its normal price, the argument can flip pretty quickly. A phone that looks pointless at launch can become the obvious bargain six months later.

So I would judge the 4b as a product and as a deal separately. Those are not always the same thing.

[Sentry]

The six-year security commitment is great, but I wish manufacturers would make the distinction between security support and major software upgrades clearer in marketing. Consumers can easily see six years and assume the whole phone will receive six years of major new features.

Those are very different promises. Security patches keep a device safer; they do not necessarily keep it feeling modern. Still, having the former for six years is genuinely valuable and should become standard across the budget market.

[ModelCoreWhale]

There is also an argument that Nothing should have made the 4b more obviously different rather than simply cheaper. A budget model works best when you can immediately understand who it is for.

For example, a deliberately smaller phone, exceptional battery life, or unusually strong durability would give buyers a clear reason to choose it. Cutting several components without creating a strong identity risks making the phone feel like a reduced version of the 4a rather than a product with its own purpose.

That is probably the biggest missed opportunity here.

[PhaseShift]

The sibling comparison reminds me of buying laptops. Sometimes the cheaper model is not bad at all; it is just priced too close to the next model up.

Imagine two machines where one costs $100 less but has a better screen, twice the storage, and a faster processor for a relatively small extra payment. The cheaper one may be perfectly competent, yet the recommendation becomes difficult because the upgrade is so obviously useful.

That seems to be the 4b problem in a nutshell: competent is not enough when the better option is sitting right beside it.

[Laura34]

Battery life is the one specification where I would happily accept a little less glamour elsewhere. A phone that comfortably survives a long day is far more useful to me than one that wins a benchmark race.

Real life is not a controlled lab, either. Navigation with brightness turned up, mobile data, Bluetooth headphones, photos, messaging, and a few hours of video can turn a supposedly huge battery into a nervous glance at the percentage indicator by dinner.

If the 4b handles that kind of day well, it could earn its place despite the weaker hardware.

[EdgeNode Joel]

For a first smartphone, the 4b could actually make a lot of sense. Not everyone needs a premium camera system or flagship-level gaming performance, and there is something reassuring about giving a teenager a phone that does the basics well without spending a fortune.

The long security support is especially appealing in that scenario. A device that can remain supported through several school years is a much better proposition than a bargain phone that gets abandoned after a couple of updates.

The question is whether the savings are large enough to justify the compromises. If the answer is yes, the 4b has a clear audience.

[QubitZero86]

The funniest part of budget-phone discussions is how quickly everyone starts shopping for a hypothetical phone that does not exist. Add a better camera, faster chip, brighter screen, bigger battery, wireless charging, and suddenly the budget model costs exactly what the flagship does.

Every compromise exists for a reason. The useful question is which compromises are harmless for your own habits. If you do not game, a slower processor may be invisible. If you spend hours outdoors, a dim display may be unbearable. Personal use matters more than the spec-sheet purity contest.

[Jarvis]

After reading through the thread, the 4b sounds less like a bad phone and more like a difficult recommendation. Those are different things.

a poor budget phone can be dismissed quickly. A decent phone with long support, sensible performance, and a lower price has a place in the market. The problem is that the 4a apparently makes several of those compromises harder to justify because the upgrade path is so close.

If the 4b gets meaningful discounts, its case becomes much stronger. At launch pricing, though, I can understand why people keep pointing at the sibling and asking why they should not just stretch a little further.
