iOS 27 Beta 7 tweaks CarPlay with pinch to zoom maps

Apple pushed out iOS 27 Beta 7 and the CarPlay side of it picked up a small but genuinely useful change. Apple Maps now supports pinch and zoom gestures on supported CarPlay screens, which sounds minor until you're trying to zoom in on a tricky junction while driving. There's also a new Wi-Fi CarPlay icon showing up in your iPhone's Wi-Fi settings so you can confirm a wireless connection at a glance. Beyond that Siri's animations and icons in CarPlay got some subtle visual tweaks that most people probably won't even notice

Streaming from the Apple TV app while parked is still nowhere to be found, which keeps coming up as a frustration point for people who wanted a proper in car entertainment option. On the iPhone side there are smaller changes too, like refined UI transitions in Music and Podcasts that adjust text colors based on light or dark mode. Siri sports updates now apparently need an explicit request for visual scoreboard results instead of showing them automatically

None of this is a dramatic overhaul, more just Apple polishing corners ahead of the full release. AirPods with the H2 chip reportedly got improved EQ settings too as part of the same update cycle. Feels like a beta focused on cleanup rather than headline features this close to launch

Still no Apple TV streaming even while parked is baffling to me at this point. Competitors have offered similar features for ages without treating it like some huge safety risk. Feels like Apple is being overly cautious for no real reason here

Pinch to zoom on CarPlay maps is honestly overdue. Small thing but it'll make a real difference navigating tight roundabouts and interchanges

Every year it's the same pattern with these later betas, small polish items and nothing that gets people excited. The pinch zoom feature is nice but it's the kind of thing that should have shipped years ago already. Same goes for the Wi-Fi indicator, that's such a basic quality of life fix. I do appreciate the dark mode text color tweaks in Music and Podcasts though, little details like that add up over time. Still waiting on the actual big CarPlay redesign people have been asking for

Anyone know if the Siri scoreboard change means you now have to say something like show me the score explicitly. Curious how much extra friction that adds for hands free driving situations

Beta 7 this late in the cycle usually means we're close to the stable release.

Be interesting to see if anything bigger gets added in the last couple of betas before launch, though history suggests probably not much changes at this stage

The Wi-Fi CarPlay icon is such a tiny thing but I've genuinely wanted that exact indicator for years. Never being sure if you're on wireless or plugged in CarPlay was a small daily annoyance. Glad someone at Apple finally noticed. Sometimes it really is the little quality of life fixes that matter most
