How Fairphone actually builds its ethical, repairable Gen 6+ phone

[Isabella_61]

Fairphone's Gen 6+ treats repairability and ethical sourcing as core engineering requirements rather than secondary marketing claims, earning a perfect 10 out of 10 repairability score from iFixit. The phone uses a fully modular design built around standard T5 Torx screws rather than the glue and tightly integrated assemblies most manufacturers rely on, letting owners replace 12 different components, including the battery, display, cameras, speakers and USB-C port, with nothing more than a single screwdriver

The company sources fair-mined gold, silver and tungsten, manufactures using more than 50 percent recycled materials, and builds in factories certified for fair labor conditions, while claiming full e-waste neutrality. Fairphone backs the hardware with a five-year warranty and at least eight years of software updates, arguing that repairability only matters if a device also stays supported long enough to make repairing it worthwhile in the first place, otherwise a perfectly replaceable battery in an abandoned, unsupported phone accomplishes very little

Building a phone this way involves real engineering tradeoffs, the modular USB-C port and screw-based construction mean Fairphone 6+ can only achieve IP55 dust and water resistance rather than the fuller waterproofing glued designs typically allow, and its Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM trades some raw performance for long-term serviceability. Curious what people think about this specific tradeoff, does prioritizing genuine repairability over waterproofing and flagship specs represent the right compromise for a modern smartphone

Nearly impossible? How Fairphone built the ethical, repairable Fairphone Gen 6+arstechnica.com

A perfect 10 from iFixit is genuinely rare enough that it's worth appreciating on its own, mainstream flagship phones almost never even attempt this level of serviceability, let alone actually achieve it

The IP55 rating tradeoff is honestly the most interesting engineering compromise here, waterproofing and repairability have historically pulled in opposite directions, and Fairphone chose repairability deliberately rather than chasing a marketing checkbox

[Outlaw]

Eight years of guaranteed software support paired with genuine hardware repairability is the combination that actually matters, a repairable phone running years of unpatched software isn't meaningfully better for longevity than a sealed one

[DarkEnergy27]

Fair-mined gold, silver and tungsten sourcing deserves real credit specifically because it's the unglamorous, expensive part of ethical manufacturing that's much easier to skip than the more visible repairability angle

[Brandon80]

Standard T5 Torx screws instead of proprietary fasteners is such a small detail that says a lot about the company's actual philosophy, no manufacturer accidentally chooses the more accessible option, that's a deliberate design decision
