Google has launched its Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL smartphones, powered by the new Tensor G6 chip and featuring camera upgrades, thinner designs and deeper integration of Gemini AI tools including a feature called Magic Capture that automatically selects the optimal frame from a burst of photos

The Tensor G6 being a custom Google designed chip rather than an off the shelf processor continues Google's strategy of tightly coupling hardware and on device AI capability, which matters increasingly as more Gemini features move toward running locally on the phone rather than requiring a round trip to the cloud for every request

Magic Capture as a headline camera feature is a good example of where phone AI features are heading generally, rather than a manual editing tool, the phone is making a judgment call about which frame looks best and presenting that as the default result, which raises the now familiar tradeoff between convenience and losing granular user control over the final output

Positioning Gemini as a core selling point of the hardware itself rather than just an app you can download is a deliberate differentiation strategy against the iPhone, Apple has been comparatively slower and more cautious about deeply embedding generative AI features into its camera and core OS experience, so Google is leaning hard into being the AI native phone option

Pricing and camera specs matter to phone buyers as always, but the more interesting long term story here is whether tighter hardware and AI integration actually produces meaningfully better everyday experiences or just marginally nicer photos and marginally more automated workflows that most users barely notice day to day

I think the Pixel 11 launch is best understood as Google using its hardware line as a showcase and testbed for Gemini capabilities that will eventually filter down to lower end devices and other manufacturers running Android with Gemini built in, the flagship phone matters less on its own merits than as a signal of where on device AI is headed

Magic Capture automatically picking the best frame sounds convenient until it picks wrong and you have no easy way to override it

Always_Craig96

Most of these implementations do let you dig into the burst and pick manually if you want, its usually just not the default flow

Tensor G6 being custom silicon is the real story here honestly, thats what actually enables on device AI at this scale

Fan

Fair point, hardware specs have mostly plateaued across flagships, software and AI features are where the real competition is now

DeanAmbrose11

Google positioning itself as the AI native phone brand against Apple's more cautious approach is a clear strategic bet

Camera upgrades sound nice but the actual differentiator these days really is the on device AI stack more than optics

No specific benchmarks in what I saw, would want to see real comparisons before judging the improvement

Makes sense given how much Google has invested in Gemini across everything else, the phone is just the hardware extension of that

Rory99

Agreed, running Gemini features locally instead of round tripping to the cloud is a meaningful latency and privacy improvement

Curious how much better the on device model actually is compared to what shipped in the Tensor G5 generation
