Google confirms Googlebook detachables are coming soon

Google's new laptop platform is expanding into tablets with keyboards. 9to5Google reports that Google said at Android Dev Summit 2026 that Googlebook spans large screen devices from clamshells and convertibles, and soon detachables

Four of the five launch Googlebooks are traditional clamshell laptops: the Asus Googlebook 14, Dell XPS Googlebook, HP Googlebook 14 and Lenovo Googlebook 15. The only convertible is the Acer Googlebook 14, priced at $899

Lenovo is expected to make the first detachable model. A leak in July showed a tablet with a keyboard, a kickstand and a Glowbar light strip

For now, some parts of the interface, including the home screen, Overview and app tray, only work in landscape orientation, which would need to change for tablet use. There is no launch date yet, and the article wonders what detachables mean for high end Android tablets

Detachables make sense for a platform built around Android apps, which already work well on tablets. The question is whether Google keeps separate tablet and laptop lines or merges them. Portrait support will be essential if these devices are meant to replace tablets

Would you buy a detachable Googlebook? And should Google merge its tablets and laptops into one platform?
