Foldable phones have been on the market for several years now, promising the combined benefits of a compact everyday phone and a genuinely larger tablet like screen when unfolded, but adoption has remained fairly limited compared to conventional smartphones, partly due to a significant price premium and partly due to lingering concerns about the durability of the folding screen mechanism itself over years of regular daily use.

Supporters argue that foldables represent the most genuinely interesting hardware innovation the smartphone category has seen in years, and that early durability concerns will steadily improve the same way early smartphone cameras and battery life eventually did. Skeptics argue foldables remain a fundamentally niche product aimed mainly at early adopters willing to pay a premium for a genuinely unproven form factor, and that most people simply do not need or particularly want the added bulk and complexity a folding mechanism actually introduces. I own a foldable and genuinely love the extra screen real estate for reading and video, but I completely understand why the price premium keeps a lot of people away from trying one.

Durability concerns still keep me personally away from foldables, I have heard too many stories about screen creases and hinge issues developing after just a year or two of regular use.
