Broken my wireless mouse, yet again

Cannot really argue with that. Most people skip the diagnostic step and go straight to reinstalling things unnecessarily.

Dropped mice are a rite of passage apparently The trick that saved mine was moving the wireless receiver closer and using a mouse mat instead of letting it bounce around on the desk. Less sliding means fewer accidental launches onto the floor.

A wired mouse is not a bad shout either. Some of the older wired models survive years of abuse because there is simply less to break. The cable gets annoying until you remember it is not flying off the desk every other week

The laminate floor is the real enemy here. It has claimed more gadgets than I can count. Phones, controllers, mice, all seem to find that one corner where gravity wins.

A cheap wired mouse for the rough jobs and a nicer wireless one for relaxing use is probably the sweet spot. No need to retire wireless completely because of a few unfortunate experiments with gravity.

Been there. My solution was a mouse bungee and a slightly bigger desk area so the mouse stopped hanging over the edge. Sounds silly but half the damage was from catching the cable or knocking it during a game.

Also worth checking the warranty on some brands. A few actually cover accidental issues better than people expect, although they probably do not list "fell off desk again" as a feature

Going wired is actually underrated. People jump to wireless for everything now, but a decent wired keyboard and mouse combo can last ages and you never have to think about batteries.

The only downside is cable clutter. Good cable routing makes a huge difference though. Five minutes with some clips can save years of frustration.

The funny thing is mice seem to survive being thrown in bags, knocked around and used daily, then one tiny drop onto a hard floor finishes them

A small rubber bumper around the edges might help if you are sticking with wireless. Not pretty, but neither is buying a new mouse every few months.

A wired setup would probably solve the charging and drop problem, but check the cable length before buying. I made that mistake once and ended up stretching a cable across the desk like some kind of DIY obstacle course

A longer braided cable is worth the extra money in my experience.

Wireless is still worth it for me. The freedom of not having a cable catch on things is too good. The trick is not treating the mouse like a hockey puck after a frustrating game

Maybe a cheaper spare mouse is the answer. Keep the expensive one for careful use and the backup for those days when everything goes wrong.

No shame in going back to wired. Sometimes technology moves forward and then we discover the old solution was pretty good all along.

My old office mouse survived five years because it was boring. The fancy replacement with lights and extra buttons lasted about six months. Less can definitely be more.

Have you checked whether the battery compartment or casing is already weakened? A lot of mice get a tiny crack after one drop and then every later bump becomes the final boss fight

If it is just the shell, some models have replacement parts available. Saves throwing away the whole thing.

A friend of mine keeps a towel under his keyboard and mouse because his desk is next to a tiled floor. Looks ridiculous until you see him still using the same gear after years.

Sometimes the boring practical fixes are the ones that work best.

The wired route makes sense, especially if the mouse is mainly for a desktop PC. For laptops I still prefer wireless because carrying a cable around gets old quickly.

There is no perfect option, just different annoyances. Wireless has batteries, wired has cables. Pick your problem

The real question is how many mice have lost their lives to the same exact spot on the floor. There must be a scientific study waiting to happen.

Seriously though, a small raised edge or tray on the desk can stop a lot of accidental drops. Prevention beats replacement.

The charging issue and the dropping issue are separate problems really. A wired mouse fixes the battery problem but does not stop the famous hand slip moment.

A heavier mouse might actually help. Some of the super light ones are great for speed but feel like they are one bump away from launching.

Not sure I would give up wireless completely. The convenience is hard to beat when the desk is tidy and the receiver is reliable.

Maybe the answer is a wired mouse for now while deciding. No need to make an expensive choice while annoyed after another broken gadget.

Could be worth looking at how the mouse is stored when not in use too. Mine used to get knocked off the desk because I shoved books and headphones around it.

A little dedicated space fixed it. Sometimes the problem is not the device, it is the chaotic battlefield around it

I switched to a basic wired Logitech mouse after killing two wireless ones. It was not exciting, but it just works every day.

There is something satisfying about a gadget that does not need an app, firmware update or charging cable. Plug it in and get on with it

A good quality wireless mouse should not be that fragile, although some lightweight models feel like they are built from biscuit wrappers

Look at models aimed at office users rather than ultra cheap ones. They are often less flashy but designed to survive years of daily clicks.
