Apple has refreshed its entry level MacBook Pro. 9to5Mac reports that the new base 14 inch MacBook Pro now uses the M6 chip, replacing the M5 model, and launches alongside a new M6 iMac

It starts at $1,999 with 16GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage, in silver and space black. Pre-orders open on 28 October, with first deliveries on Friday 6 November. 9to5Mac notes that prices are unchanged from the previous generation

The M6 has a 12 core CPU, which Apple says includes the world's fastest CPU core, along with a 12 core GPU that is up to 30 percent faster than the M5 and a dual 16 core Neural Engine that is up to 1.9 times faster. Apple claims language model prompt processing is up to 13 times faster than the M1 13 inch MacBook Pro and 1.3 times faster than the M5 model, with Xcode builds up to 2.5 times and 1.3 times faster respectively

Connectivity moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Ports include three Thunderbolt 4 connections, HDMI, MagSafe 3, an SD card slot and a headphone jack, and there is a 12MP Center Stage camera. It can charge to 50 percent in around 30 minutes with a 96W adapter

This is a sensible spec bump rather than the long rumoured redesign with an OLED touchscreen, which is expected to arrive for the higher end models. All the performance figures come from Apple, so independent tests will be needed. For most buyers, unchanged pricing with a faster chip is a decent deal

Is the M6 base MacBook Pro worth upgrading to? Or are you waiting for the OLED redesign?
