Apple's foldable iPhone Duo is real, and it starts at $1,999

New Apple CEO John Ternus unveiled the company's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, at Apple's September event on September 9th, his first major product launch since taking over from Tim Cook. The Duo opens to a continuous 7.6-inch display, 80 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, while remaining Apple's thinnest iPhone ever, and starts at 1,999 dollars for 256GB, running up to 3,199 dollars for the top configuration, making it comfortably the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold. Pre-orders begin October 16th ahead of an October 23rd release, separate from the standard iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which arrive September 18th starting at 1,199 and 1,299 dollars respectively

Ternus specifically criticized existing foldables for feeling like two phones awkwardly stuck together, saying Apple's goal was an experience as intuitive as using an iPad. The Duo supports Apple Pencil for the first time on any iPhone, lets users run two separate apps or two windows of the same website side by side, and includes a Standby feature that turns the folded front into a bedside clock. CNN's hands-on impressions noted the inner screen's matte finish significantly reduces glare and makes the crease barely noticeable, with apps shifting between the folded and unfolded screens without lag

Ternus framed the entire event around AI running primarily on-device rather than in the cloud, emphasizing privacy as Apple's guiding design principle, while Siri gained new capabilities through Google's Gemini AI integration. Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max with what Ternus called the fastest chip ever put in an iPhone, alongside updated AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, and began offering lease options for its newest, pricier devices. Curious what people think about Apple entering foldables this late and this expensively, does arriving years after Samsung with a more refined first attempt justify a price nearly double the standard Pro model, or is Apple simply testing how much its most loyal customers will pay

A near 800 dollar premium over the standard Pro model is a genuinely steep entry price even by Apple's usual standards, this is clearly being positioned and priced as a genuine luxury tier rather than a mainstream upgrade path

The matte inner screen reducing glare and hiding the crease is exactly the kind of detail that separates a genuinely refined foldable from an early rough draft, that's the specific complaint that's plagued competitors' displays for years

[Crossing65]

Ternus leading with privacy and on-device AI while also integrating Google's Gemini into Siri is a genuinely interesting positioning choice, mixing an independence message with a direct dependency on a competitor's model underneath

That Apple Pencil support finally arriving on a phone rather than staying iPad-exclusive shows how much the Duo is genuinely being treated as a hybrid device category rather than simply an iPhone that happens to fold

This being Ternus's first major keynote as CEO makes the Duo's reception genuinely consequential for how his leadership era gets framed going forward, a strong or weak launch here sets an early tone either way

Curious how the standard iPhone 18 Pro getting somewhat overshadowed by the Duo reveal affects its own sales, that's historically been Apple's actual volume driver and it's now sharing the spotlight with a genuinely more expensive alternative

Offering lease options right alongside the highest starting price in iPhone history is a smart, almost necessary pairing, that price point genuinely needs a payment structure beyond a single upfront purchase for most buyers
