Apple makes noise cancellation standard on the $129 AirPods 5

Apple introduced AirPods 5 at its September 9th event, bringing Active Noise Cancellation to its entry-level earbuds for the first time, starting at 129 dollars, with a version featuring a Wireless Charging Case, longer battery life and stem-based volume controls priced at 149 dollars. That's a notable change from AirPods 4, where ANC was reserved for a pricier 179 dollar model, and Apple says the new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational algorithms remove up to 50 percent more external noise than the previous generation

Both models get an improved Transparency mode designed to reproduce nearby voices and environmental sounds more naturally, Adaptive Audio that automatically balances noise cancellation and transparency based on the surrounding environment, and Conversation Awareness, which lowers media volume automatically when the wearer starts speaking. Battery life reaches up to five hours with ANC enabled on a single charge, extending to 22 hours total with the charging case. Both models also gain deeper integration with Apple's rebuilt Siri, which Apple says can use context from messages, emails and photos to complete tasks and provide more relevant responses

Apple's specific best in the industry noise cancellation claim is based on its own July 2026 internal testing against competing open-ear wireless earbuds available at the time. Pre-orders opened immediately following the announcement, with both models arriving in stores September 18th.
