Most of us left school knowing how to calculate the angles of a triangle and recite a few dates from history. Fewer of us left knowing how to read a payslip, cook a cheap meal, change a tyre or understand a tenancy agreement. Many people spend their twenties learning these things the hard way. Some never learn them at all

Schools have a lot to fit into a limited timetable, and teachers already do a huge amount. Some practical subjects have been added over the years, like financial education in parts of the curriculum. But plenty of people still feel that the basics of adult life are left to chance, depending on what parents happen to teach at home

My vote goes to basic cooking. Not fancy recipes, just how to plan a week of meals, use leftovers and make five or six cheap dishes from scratch. It would save young people money, improve their health and give them a skill for life. Home economics existed once, but it seems to have faded out at many schools

Other ideas I have heard include first aid, touch typing, basic car maintenance, spotting scams online, sewing a button back on and knowing how to complain effectively. Some people would add public speaking or negotiation, since those skills seem to matter hugely at work

Which skill do you think everyone should learn at school? And did you learn anything practical there that has stayed useful?
Opinions are my own. Obviously.
