Starting a new hobby can be intimidating. There is new jargon, unfamiliar equipment and usually a lot of conflicting advice online. Experienced people often forget how confusing it was at the beginning. A single good tip at the right moment can save a beginner months of frustration, wasted money or even giving up altogether

The best tips are often surprisingly simple. Things like do not buy expensive kit straight away, join a club, practise little and often, or ignore the people who say you are doing it wrong. Some tips are specific to one hobby, like keeping your bike chain clean or always letting your bread rise longer than the recipe says. Others apply to almost everything

My hobby is photography, and my main tip is to learn the camera you already have before buying a new one. When I started, I was convinced that better gear would make better photos. It did not. Learning about light, composition and patience made a much bigger difference than any new lens

Please mention your hobby along with your tip, so beginners can find the advice that applies to them. Stories about mistakes you made when starting out are welcome too. Sometimes knowing that everyone struggled at first is the most reassuring tip of all

What tip would you give an absolute beginner in your hobby? And what do you wish someone had told you?
