Started something you thought would be casual and discovered it was actually an entire world with its own vocabulary, its own experts, its own debates, its own gear obsessives, its own history?

This happens with almost everything if you go far enough in. Bread baking, amateur radio, film photography, birdwatching, fountain pens, chess, woodworking. The point at which a hobby stops being something you do and starts being something you are is interesting.
