Blue Origin has identified the root cause of the massive explosion that destroyed its New Glenn rocket during a launch pad test back in May, tracing it to the main oxygen valve on one of the rockets seven BE-4 first stage engines, a finding that genuinely matters beyond just Blue Origin itself since the same engine also powers United Launch Alliances Vulcan rocket

CEO Dave Limp announced the finding in a social media post on August 5th, more than two months after the blast, saying the anomaly originated at the main oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines, which was later confirmed by hardware recovery and inspections, the explosion happened on May 28th during a routine static fire test ahead of New Glenns planned fourth orbital flight, destroying the rocket entirely and severely damaging Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral, Blue Origins sole orbital launch site, the blast was powerful enough to send shockwaves across the surrounding Florida coastline

Limp said extensive component level and engine hot fire tests have been conducted to understand the failure mode and inform mitigations, the fix itself involves small modifications to the valve design that can be retrofitted onto existing engines, updated hardware manufacturing is already underway and is expected to be completed by the end of August, Limp said the path forward is now clear, and the company is pushing hard to get New Glenn back to flight before the end of the year, notably Blue Origin is choosing not to fully replace a large rocket transporter tower that was damaged in the explosion, instead changing how it integrates payloads onto the rocket going forward, a workaround meant to avoid a lengthy rebuild

The genuinely significant wrinkle here is that two BE-4 engines also power each United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket, though ULAs spokesperson clarified to Spaceflight Now that the Vulcan specific BE-4 engines arent identical to New Glenns, since New Glenns version includes additional features for relight, landing and reuse that Vulcan doesnt need, Blue Origin will still perform the necessary valve modifications on Vulcan engines too, with that work happening both at ULAs Decatur, Alabama manufacturing plant and at Cape Canaveral

New Glenns first stage is designed to be reusable across at least 25 flights, powered by all seven BE-4 engines burning liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas, this investigation and fix represents the first major public update on the failure since the explosion occurred, and getting the rocket safely back to flight this year is now a genuine priority for Blue Origin given how much is riding on New Glenns reliability, including its role in the broader Amazon Leo satellite constellation and NASA missions

The fact that this same valve issue could also affect ULAs Vulcan rocket is genuinely the most consequential detail here, this isnt just a Blue Origin problem, its a shared engine supplier problem that could ripple into a completely separate companys launch schedule too
