Tilting the head changes the angle at which sound reaches each ear, so a dog trying to localize where a specific sound is coming from will naturally tilt to make it arrive at slightly different times in each ear, giving their brain better directional information. Animal cognition researcher Julia Meyers-Manor notes this same behavior shows up across many species, humans, birds and dogs all do some version of it, and barn owls take it to an extreme, capable of swiveling their neck 270 degrees specifically to point their sensitive ears in almost any direction.

A 2021 study published in Animal Cognition found something more specific though, dogs that were unusually skilled at learning and remembering the names of toys tilted their heads far more often than other dogs, 43 percent of the time compared to just 2 percent among less gifted word learners. Researchers suspect this points to the head tilt sometimes being less about physically capturing sound and more about the brain actively processing a familiar, meaningful word, since dogs process familiar human speech primarily using the right side of their brain, and shifting head position may help route that information more efficiently.
