With prices rising everywhere, it is worth remembering how many enjoyable things cost absolutely nothing. Free museums, parks, libraries, walking trails and community events offer plenty to do without spending a penny. Some hobbies can be started with almost no money at all. Sharing ideas might help someone on a tight budget find something new to enjoy

In the UK, many national museums and galleries have free entry, including the British Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Tate galleries. Libraries offer free books, ebooks, audiobooks and often free events or computer access. Parks, beaches, forests and national trails provide endless opportunities for walking, cycling and picnics. Many towns have free festivals, open days and heritage events throughout the year. Planning a day out does not have to cost much

Free hobbies are everywhere too. Birdwatching, running, foraging, photography with a phone, drawing, writing and volunteering cost little or nothing to start. Online learning platforms, free courses and YouTube tutorials make it easy to learn new skills without paying for classes. Some local groups, like parkrun, are completely free and very welcoming

My favourite free day out is a long walk along a canal towpath, finishing at a free museum in the city centre. I bring a flask of tea and a packed lunch, and it costs nothing apart from the bus fare. It feels like a proper day out
