[Dinosours] Fossil evidence suggests fern savannahs turned Triassic Europe into a wildfire machine

[RedKnight]

New fossil evidence suggests that ancient fern savannahs may have transformed parts of Europe into a wildfire prone landscape during the end Triassic mass extinction, one of the five major extinction events in Earth's history. Researchers found that these fern dominated ecosystems repeatedly regrew after fires swept through, creating a steady supply of fresh fuel that helped prolong and intensify the fire cycle rather than letting the landscape recover into something less flammable

This kind of self reinforcing fire cycle is a compelling piece of the puzzle for understanding how the end Triassic extinction unfolded, since it suggests vegetation patterns themselves may have actively worsened environmental conditions rather than just passively responding to them. Ferns are known for being fast growing pioneer plants that can recolonize burned ground quickly, which is normally seen as a resilience trait, but in this case that same trait appears to have fed a repeating destructive cycle

Understanding ancient fire ecology like this offers a useful comparison point for how modern ecosystems respond to increasingly frequent fire events, even though the underlying causes of the end Triassic extinction were different from anything happening today. It is a striking reminder that the interaction between plant regrowth patterns and fire frequency has shaped Earth's landscapes across deep geological time, not just in the present day

Ferns being fast growing pioneers normally reads as a good resilience trait, interesting twist that it backfired into a fire feedback loop here

The end Triassic extinction gets way less attention than the dinosaur ending one but the underlying science is just as fascinating

Self reinforcing fire cycles like this feel like an eerie preview of concerns people have about modern fire prone regions

Would love to know how long this fern fire cycle actually persisted before the ecosystem eventually shifted to something else

[RustyHawk]

Deep time fire ecology research like this always makes for a great comparison point even if the causes are totally different from today's fires

Curious what other plant communities existed alongside these ferns and whether any of them broke the fire cycle eventually

[R931]

Wonder if there is a modern ecosystem showing a similar pioneer plant driven fire feedback loop that scientists are watching closely

[Sentinel96]

This is a good reminder that mass extinctions are rarely a single event, more often a tangled mess of reinforcing environmental feedback loops

Fossil evidence for something as specific as a repeating regrowth and burn pattern is impressive to actually pull out of the geological record
