The clocks go back later this month, and the long dark evenings are on their way. For many people, the change of season brings a change of hobbies too. Summer is for gardening, cycling, cricket and barbecues, while winter seems to belong to indoor projects, cosy evenings and things that involve a lot of tea. Some hobbies only come out of the cupboard when the weather turns

Typical winter hobbies might include jigsaws, board games, knitting, model making, reading long books, baking, video games and learning a new skill online. Some people plan their winter projects months in advance, like a big Lego set saved for December or a novel they have been meaning to write. Others prefer outdoor winter activities, like stargazing, cold water swimming or long frosty walks

For me, winter means jigsaw puzzles. The dining table becomes a thousand piece puzzle station from November to February, and the family has learned to eat on trays. There is something satisfying about putting the last piece in while the rain lashes the windows. This year I have a two thousand piece one waiting, which might be overambitious

Winter hobbies are also a great way to deal with the darker months, which can be hard for a lot of people. Having something to look forward to in the evenings makes a big difference. Sharing ideas here might help someone find a new one

What do you only do when the nights draw in? And what is your project for this winter?
