The single biggest mistake is buying based purely on total wattage without checking the actual efficiency rating or build quality, assuming a higher number automatically means a better unit. A cheap high wattage power supply from an unknown brand can genuinely be less safe and less stable than a well reviewed unit with a lower but properly rated output from a reputable manufacturer.

A closely related mistake is undersizing the actual power supply by only calculating the bare minimum a system needs at idle. Without accounting for genuine transient power spikes that happen briefly under heavy load, particularly with modern graphics cards, which can trip protection circuits or cause instability even though the average draw looks fine on paper.

People also frequently ignore the actual modular versus non modular cable question. Assuming it's purely cosmetic, when non modular cables you don't actually need can genuinely hurt airflow in a compact case, adding real unnecessary heat buildup that a fully modular unit with only the cables you actually need would have avoided.

Another common trap is not checking actual certification ratings. Like the 80 Plus efficiency tiers, and assuming all power supplies convert power equally efficiently, when a genuinely lower rated unit wastes more electricity as heat, which affects both your actual power bill and the practical heat load your cooling system has to manage.

The honest summary is that a power supply is genuinely one of the worst places to cut corners in a build. Since it's the one component that can actually damage every other part if it fails poorly, and a reputable brand with proper certification and headroom above your actual calculated need is worth the modest extra cost
