Walk into any computer shop and you will see a rainbow of glowing fans, light strips, keyboards, mice and even memory sticks. RGB lighting has become almost standard in gaming hardware, with some parts sold only in lit versions. For some people, it is a fun way to personalise a PC and make it look spectacular. For others, it is an annoying distraction that they switch off as soon as possible

RGB fans argue that a well lit PC looks amazing, especially with a glass side panel and colours matched to the room or a favourite game. Lighting can also be useful, like showing temperatures through colour changes or keyboard keys that light up for specific games. Others say it adds cost, needs extra software and makes a computer look like a fairground ride

Software is a common complaint. Different brands often need different apps to control their lighting, and these apps can be bloated, buggy or slow to start. Free tools like OpenRGB try to control everything from one place, with varying success. Getting fans, memory and keyboard to all show the same colour can turn into a weekend project

My PC is in the middle. I have a single soft white glow inside the case and lighting switched off on everything else. It looks clean, and I can see inside the case without a disco. My son, on the other hand, has every colour cycling at full speed, and his bedroom looks like a nightclub

RGB lighting: love it, hate it or somewhere in between? And what does your setup look like?
