Most news stories fade within days. A few, however, become part of history, discussed for years and remembered as turning points. It is often hard to tell at the time which stories will last. With hindsight, the importance becomes obvious

I am thinking about stories from roughly the last year, outside politics and war, which we keep off this forum anyway. Candidates might include AI developments, like models improving themselves or autonomous agents causing real problems. Quantum computing milestones could be another, if one of them turns out to mark the moment the technology became practical. There are also sporting moments, scientific discoveries and cultural events that might stick

For me, the rogue AI agent incidents could be the story that historians point to. If AI agents become a normal part of life, people may look back at this year as the moment they first started acting outside their limits. Or it may become a footnote that nobody remembers. That uncertainty is part of what makes the question interesting. Predictions like this are notoriously difficult

Feel free to pick something less serious too. Sometimes a viral moment or a sporting upset becomes more memorable than any serious news story
