We all have days where nothing goes right. The alarm fails, the train is cancelled, the coffee machine breaks and somebody at work decides today is the day for a difficult conversation. Big solutions like holidays or a new job are not much help at four in the afternoon. What gets most of us through is something small, cheap and close at hand

For some people it is food, like a bacon sandwich, a bar of chocolate or a cup of tea made exactly right. Others swear by a walk around the block, a hot shower or ten minutes with headphones and a favourite album. Pets seem to be a common answer too, since a dog that is delighted to see you does not care how badly your meeting went. A few people simply go to bed early and declare the day over

Mine is cooking something from scratch, even if it is just a simple pasta dish. Chopping onions and stirring a pan gives my brain one easy job to focus on. By the time it is ready, whatever was bothering me usually feels smaller. It helps that I get dinner at the end of it

These little habits are worth sharing, because what works for one person might help someone else on a rough day. They also say a lot about us. Some people need noise and company, while others need quiet and their own space

So what is your small fix for a bad day? Bonus points if it costs nothing
