What's a rule you have for yourself that other people probably think is unnecessary

[Router48]

Not talking about big life philosophies here, more the small specific personal rules that make total sense in your head but would probably sound a bit odd explained out loud to someone else. Could be about money, food, sleep, work, whatever

Curious how many of these rules people actually stick to consistently versus the ones that sound good in theory but quietly get broken all the time. Sometimes the rule itself matters less than the fact you made a conscious decision about it at some point

No judgment here, the weirder and more specific the better honestly

[Highland Canopy]

Never answer work messages after 7pm unless something is actually on fire, took me years to actually enforce this one consistently

[Golden Dan]

Always keep the gas tank at least half full, my dad drilled this into me and now I genuinely feel anxious below that line

[RustyHawk]

Never buy anything over a certain amount without sleeping on it for 24 hours first, has saved me from so many impulse purchases

[NeutrinoX54]

I refuse to eat leftovers cold, they have to be reheated properly or I just won't touch them, my family thinks this is ridiculous

[Rogue Sam]

Always charge my phone to exactly 80 percent instead of 100, probably does nothing meaningful for battery life but I can't stop now

[SoloOrca]

One load of laundry a day no matter how small, keeps it from ever piling up into an overwhelming weekend task

[DecentBloke]

Don't led money to family

[Marcus95]

That 80 percent rule feels oddly relatable. There is something satisfying about stopping short of full, like it is more "controlled" somehow.

A similar habit here is never letting volume land on an odd number, it always has to be even or a multiple of five.

No practical reason at all, but it just feels right every time.

Friends notice it eventually and give that look like something is slightly off

[CodyRhodes99]

There is a quiet comfort in these small personal rules. They create a sense of order even when everything else is a bit chaotic.

One rule that sticks out is always checking the door handle twice before leaving, even when it was clearly locked the first time.

It is not about doubt, more like completing a ritual.

Skipping it feels worse than being late somehow.

[GoalPoacher42]

The 80 percent charging thing might not be entirely pointless. There is some truth to battery longevity and partial charging.

That said, the consistency matters more than the science at that point.

A similar habit here is never starting a show unless there is enough time to finish the episode fully.

Stopping halfway feels like leaving a sentence unfinished

[Dragon]

There is something almost superstitious about these rules, even when they are framed as practical.

One that stands out is always placing keys in the exact same spot, no exceptions.

The one time that rule gets broken is the one time everything disappears.

So now it is less a habit and more a law.

[Holly91]

A slightly odd one is never setting alarms at random times, always rounded to something like 7:00 or 7:30.

Even if 7:23 would be more efficient, it just feels wrong somehow.

There is a strange comfort in clean numbers that is hard to explain.

[LAKnight_Prime]

That phone charging habit sounds like the kind of thing that starts logical and then turns into tradition.

One personal rule is never walking away from a microwave before it hits zero.

Standing there waiting is pointless, but leaving early feels like breaking a contract with the universe

[Craig]

There is a pattern where these rules are less about outcomes and more about feeling in control.

One example is always organizing tabs before closing a browser, even if it is just going to be opened again later.

It serves no real purpose, but it feels like leaving things in order.

[Oscar_75]

A small one that tends to confuse people is always finishing a drink completely before getting another.

Even if it is just a sip left, it has to be done.

Mixing unfinished drinks feels chaotic for no clear reason.

[Layla17]

That 80 percent habit might actually age well if battery tech keeps evolving.

A similar quirk is always re-reading a message before sending it, even casual ones.

Not for grammar, just to make sure it "sounds right" in some vague way.

[AsteroidCandle]

There is something amusing about how personal these rules are. They make perfect sense internally and zero sense externally.

One example is always stepping onto escalators with the same foot first.

No idea why that became a thing, but it stuck.

[Carol84]

A quiet one that goes unnoticed is always checking the time before sleeping and remembering it.

Waking up and calculating how long you slept feels oddly satisfying.

Even when the number is disappointing it still feels necessary.

[Dave_52]

Some of these habits almost feel like tiny games played with yourself.

One rule is never leaving a room without straightening at least one thing, even if it is minor.

It does not change much overall, but it creates a sense of progress.

Over time, those small actions add up in ways that are hard to notice directly.

[Glassy Falcon]

Sometimes a habit does not need to be scientifically perfect to make you feel organized.

There is something satisfying about having a small system that makes your day run smoother.

Even if the battery benefit is tiny, the peace of mind might be the real feature.

[FrostCandle]

Never leaving a room without taking something that belongs there is my little rule. Sounds silly until you realize how many random trips around the house it prevents.

People laugh at it until they start noticing how much time they save.

Small habits can quietly remove a lot of daily friction.

[Merchant94]

A personal rule that gets strange looks is never starting a new book before finishing the current one.

Friends say having multiple books going is normal, but it bothers me having unfinished stories sitting around.

Probably more about keeping my brain tidy than anything else.

[TheGame92]

The phone charging thing makes sense because routines are powerful. Humans love patterns, even when the original reason becomes less important over time.

There are probably plenty of habits we defend because they became part of our identity.

At some point the rule stops being about the object and starts being about the ritual.

[BiasField82]

Always washing new clothes before wearing them is one people seem divided on. Some friends think it is unnecessary, but the idea of wearing something straight from a factory feels weird.

Maybe it is excessive, but it takes two minutes and removes the thought from my mind.

A tiny inconvenience for a little extra comfort.

[Arty Kayla]

No checking emails after a certain hour is a rule that sounds dramatic until you realize how easy it is to let work follow you everywhere.

Some people think it is impossible now, but having a clear cutoff helps separate the day.

Not every message needs an immediate response.

[HitmanMarcus94]

A funny one is needing all browser tabs closed before shutting down a computer. Leaving them open feels like waking up to unfinished business.

Technically the computer does not care, but my brain definitely notices.

Sometimes the weird little rules are just ways of creating a cleaner mental space.

[Slow Hollow]

Never buying something immediately after seeing an advertisement is my personal rule. Waiting a few days usually reveals whether I actually want it or just liked the idea of it.

It has saved me from plenty of unnecessary purchases.

The hardest part is admitting how often marketing works on us.

[StormForge62]

The best personal rules are usually the ones nobody else needs to follow. They are not universal laws, just little systems that fit one person's life.

Problems happen when we assume our own routines are automatically better for everyone.

Different brains need different methods.

[Ava]

Always making the bed after waking up sounds pointless to some people, but it changes the whole feeling of the room.

It is a tiny completed task before the day even starts.

Sometimes motivation comes from stacking small wins.

[GrimAnchor]

A strange rule of mine is putting things back exactly where they belong immediately. Waiting until later creates a mystery pile that somehow becomes a weekend project.

People call it overly organized, but future me appreciates present me.

The two versions of me have a pretty good working relationship.

[Amber78]

The phone battery example reminds me of people who have very specific keyboard shortcuts or desktop layouts. Outsiders see randomness, but the person using it knows exactly where everything is.

Efficiency is personal.

A system does not have to make sense to everyone else to be useful.

[StoneCold]

Never watching a movie sequel without rewatching the original first is my unnecessary rule. Friends think it is too much effort, but I like remembering the details.

It turns the whole thing into a bigger experience instead of just another release.

Plus, sometimes the first movie was better anyway.

[Western Depot]

A personal rule about food gets the most comments: certain snacks only belong to certain times of year.

People say there are no snack seasons, but there absolutely are.

Some things taste better because you had to wait for them.

[Cosmos Wrench]

Keeping a small notebook of random ideas is another habit people find unnecessary. Most notes never become anything, but occasionally one turns into something useful.

The process matters more than the results.

A lot of creativity comes from collecting little thoughts before they disappear.

[HiggsField10]

The interesting thing about these rules is how many are really about reducing decisions. Having a default choice saves mental energy.

The world already gives us enough choices without debating every tiny thing.

Sometimes a harmless routine is just a shortcut for your brain.

[Matticus]

Never hitting snooze more than once is my rule. The second alarm somehow feels worse than the first and starts the morning with a tiny argument against myself.

Some people can snooze five times and function perfectly, which seems like a superpower.

My brain definitely was not built that way.

[StringTheory83]

There is a rule I have about not putting off small chores. If something takes less than a few minutes, it gets done immediately.

It sounds obvious, but future problems are often just tiny tasks that got ignored.

A little prevention saves a lot of annoyance.

[Kieron78]

A rule that sounds ridiculous but helps me is never going to bed angry at a messy room. Even a quick cleanup makes the next morning feel better.

It is not about perfection, just making tomorrow slightly easier.

Small kindnesses toward your future self are underrated.

[SockPuppet42]

The funny part is that some of these habits probably started from a real reason and then became tradition.

The original purpose fades, but the routine stays.

Humans are basically very advanced creatures who still enjoy having their own little rituals.

[DarkMerchant]

There is a strict "no starting a task unless there is at least 10 minutes to actually make progress" rule. Sounds minor, but it stops that annoying cycle of opening something, doing 30 seconds, then abandoning it halfway.

People tend to jump in whenever they have a spare moment, which sounds productive, but it often creates more mental clutter than progress.

Half-finished tasks pile up, and suddenly everything feels unfinished.

This rule quietly avoids that trap.

It does mean sometimes just sitting there instead of "doing something," which looks lazy from the outside

But when the time is there, things actually get completed instead of scattered.

Strangely effective for something so simple.

[Barry]

A personal rule exists that food packaging must be opened "properly" or not at all. No tearing random corners, no chaotic ripping, just using the intended opening or scissors.

Completely unnecessary? Probably.

But it avoids that situation where a bag turns into a jagged mess that never seals again.

There is also a quiet satisfaction in opening things cleanly, like defeating the packaging designer at their own game

Other people will happily attack a packet like it insulted them personally

Meanwhile there is a neat, resealable experience happening on the side.

It solves a problem nobody else seems bothered by, which is exactly the kind of rule this thread is about

[Quiet Glacier]

Always taking a photo of important documents before storing them is one of those habits people tease me about.

Then someone loses something important and suddenly they want the backup system.

Preparedness looks unnecessary right up until it is needed.
