Everyone has a default question they get asked constantly, the safe, easy, slightly boring one that acquaintances and even friends reach for automatically, and underneath it there is usually a different question you would actually love to answer if anyone bothered to ask it

The mismatch is often revealing, the question everyone defaults to is usually about status or logistics, what do you do, how is work, while the question you would rather field tends to be about meaning or curiosity, what have you been thinking about lately, what is exciting you right now

The interesting bit is why the good question never gets asked, is it that people genuinely do not think to ask it, or that the safe question is easier for both parties because it does not require either person to actually be vulnerable or interested

So name the default question you are tired of, and the one you wish someone would ask instead, and if you are feeling brave, answer your own better question right here, because the thread works both ways and someone reading deserves the good version of you too

Tired of how is work going, would love to be asked what have you changed your mind about lately, and since the thread invited it, I have quietly stopped believing busy automatically means important, took me years

Dark Jaguar

Changed your mind about lately is such a better opener than mine, I am forever asked are you seeing anyone, would much rather someone asked what is the thing you are secretly proud of that nobody has noticed

The status versus meaning split is exactly right, we default to questions that are easy to answer in one sentence because genuine curiosity requires the asker to actually sit with the answer
Always open to a good discussion

Sick of being asked what is new, nothing is ever really new week to week, would love someone to ask what have you been curious about, curiosity has an answer even on a boring week and status questions do not

Answering my own better question as invited, I have been quietly obsessed with how differently people my age are approaching retirement compared to our parents, nobody has asked me anything that interesting in months
Football is life. Everything else is just details.

The vulnerability point explains the whole pattern, the safe questions let both people stay comfortable, a good question demands the asker actually listens to the answer, which is more effort than most small talk wants to spend

Wish people asked what scares you right now instead of how are the kids, the kids question has one acceptable answer and the fear question might actually tell someone who I am

Wizard

That takes real trust to ask a near stranger though, maybe the good questions are reserved for people who have earned them and the safe defaults are just the entry fee before anyone gets there

FairDos96

Fair point, my answer shifts depending on who is asking, close friends get the vulnerable version unprompted, acquaintances get the status version because that is the appropriate depth for where we actually are

The whole thread has quietly become the good conversation everyone is craving, funny how just naming the better question and answering it yourself does more work than waiting for someone else to finally ask
