The old school internet cafe thread, did you ever pay by the hour to game or browse

[Wardlow]

Before home internet was universal, or fast enough for online gaming, internet cafes and LAN centers were where a lot of people actually got their online fix, paying by the hour to play or browse. Any good memories from an actual internet cafe or LAN center

[Sandra_29]

Spent entire weekends at a local LAN center with friends, splitting the hourly cost between us to make it last as long as possible

[Backprop Depot]

Remember the specific stress of watching the timer count down and rushing to finish a match before your paid time ran out

[Arty Candle]

The internet cafe near my house had genuinely better computers than anyone I knew owned at home, felt like visiting the future

[RainyDayFund]

Made actual friends purely through repeated visits to the same LAN center, small community built entirely around shared hourly gaming

[CyberWarden]

Got kicked out once for staying past closing time completely lost in a game, the owner was surprisingly patient about it honestly

[Cheeky Blake]

This thread reminds me how much of early online gaming culture happened in these physical, shared spaces rather than alone at home

[FinnBalor]

Absolutely did this, and it was a whole experience. You'd walk in, smell that mix of stale soda and overheating computers, then hand over your cash for an hour or two. The best part was watching the regulars absolutely dominate at Counter-Strike or StarCraft while you fumbled around trying to figure out the controls. Those places had their own unwritten rules and hierarchies. Certain machines were "claimed" by specific people, and you'd get side-eyed if you sat in the wrong spot

[Southern Joanne]

The pricing always felt wild though. Like, five bucks an hour when you could barely afford lunch? But where else were you supposed to go? Home dial-up took twenty minutes to load a single webpage, and forget about anything multiplayer. LAN centers were basically the only option if you wanted to actually play online without your connection dropping every thirty seconds. Looking back, it's kind of crazy how much we were willing to pay just for decent bandwidth

[DarkLantern]

Some of the best gaming memories came from those places. Remember when everyone would crowd around a single monitor watching someone pull off an insane play? The collective groans and cheers were half the fun. You'd show up week after week and see the same faces, eventually learning their names and what games they played. Made actual friends purely through repeated visits to the same LAN center, small community built entirely around shared hourly gaming. That kind of social space doesn't really exist anymore now that everyone just games from home

[Megan95]

Not everyone misses the internet cafe era though. Let's be real - a lot of those places were sketchy. Questionable hygiene, weird vibes, sometimes outright illegal software running on the machines. Plus the whole "paying by the minute" stress when you're in the middle of a raid or ranked match? That's not nostalgia, that's anxiety. Home internet solved a lot of problems we've conveniently forgotten about. Some things are just better now, no matter how rose-tinted the glasses get

[Cognition]

The cultural differences were fascinating too. In some countries, internet cafes were basically second homes for teenagers. You'd see kids there after school every day, doing homework on one screen while gaming on another. In Korea specifically, the PC bang scene was (and still is) on another level entirely. Professional gamers would train there, tournaments happened organically, whole careers were built in those spaces. Makes you wonder what we lost when this model died out in most of the West. Different priorities I guess

[Rapid Ava]

Does anyone else remember the specific sound of twenty people all typing and clicking at once? The hum of cooling fans, the occasional shout when someone won a match, the constant low murmur of conversation? It was chaotic but in a good way. Like a library if everyone was way too loud and playing games instead of studying. Those sensory details stick with you more than you'd expect. Now it's just silent Discord calls and isolated gaming sessions. Progress maybe, but also kind of sad

Half the fun was the janky hardware and weird setups. Monitors that were way too bright, keyboards missing half their keys, mice that tracked like they were covered in sand. Yet somehow you'd get so used to a particular machine that switching to another one felt wrong. The staff always had that one guy who knew everything about computers and would help you troubleshoot when something inevitably broke. Those impromptu tech support sessions were low-key educational
