The Geocities and personal homepage thread, did you ever build your own corner of the internet

[Octopus]

Before social media did all the work for you, plenty of us built an actual personal website on Geocities, Angelfire or similar, complete with auto playing MIDI music, a tiled background that hurt to look at, and an under construction gif that never went away. Did you ever build one, and do you remember what on earth it was actually about

[QuantumDay]

Mine was dedicated entirely to my favorite band with a visitor counter I checked obsessively, watching it climb into double digits felt like genuine fame

[CaptainStatic56]

Had an auto playing MIDI file that embarrassed me every single time a family member walked in while I had it open

[EventHorizonOctopus]

Remember the neighborhood system, being in a specific themed Geocities neighborhood felt like belonging to an actual community back then

[RomoneyWalters]

Mine never made it past the under construction gif, spent more time picking background tiles than actually adding content

[Grover26]

Had a guestbook people would actually sign, checking it for new entries was a genuine daily ritual

[Matthew97]

This thread just unlocked a memory of a hit counter widget I hadn't thought about in probably twenty years

[Boar]

Absolutely did. Geocities was basically the first social media platform where nobody was forced to call it social media. You just threw up a page about yourself, your hobbies, your favourite bands, and whatever weird obsession you had that week.

The best part was that every site had a personality. You could tell exactly what kind of person made a page just from the background, font choices, and the number of animated GIFs fighting for attention

[StarKnight36]

The under construction GIF was practically a required feature. Half the sites I remember visiting had a page saying "coming soon" for five years and somehow that was completely normal.

There was something charming about it though. People were learning HTML, image editing, and basic design by just experimenting. It was messy, but it made a lot of people curious about how the web actually worked.

[Quiet Hermit]

Never built a full Geocities page, but I spent plenty of time making little fan pages and customizing forum profiles. That was basically the same spirit, just without having to maintain an entire website.

People forget how much creativity existed before everything became a template. You had to figure things out yourself, and every broken layout taught you something.

[NeonSpectre72]

The argument that old personal websites were all terrible does not hold up. Sure, many looked like they were designed during a caffeine binge, but they were genuine expressions of personality.

Compare that to a lot of modern profiles where everything is carefully optimized for likes and engagement. The old web had more weirdness, and that was a strength.

[AntMan]

Mine was mostly a collection of random interests that made no sense together. A page about games, a page about music, some terrible animated buttons, and probably a counter showing visitor numbers that only went up because I refreshed it myself

Looking back, those sites were basically digital bedrooms. Nobody expected them to become a brand or a business, they were just yours.

[VacantTundra]

Never got into Geocities specifically, but there was definitely a period where everyone wanted their own online identity. Some people had blogs, some had fan sites, some had ridiculously customized profiles.

The tools were limited, but the imagination was not. People were creating communities before the big platforms figured out how profitable communities could be.

[KDB69]

The nostalgia is strong, but I also think those sites had a hidden lesson: nobody waited for permission to create. They just made something and put it online.

The quality was all over the place, but that was the point. The internet was full of experiments, and some of those experiments turned into actual careers. That messy creativity was valuable.

[TheGreatMoney]

The web felt like a neighbourhood back then. You would follow links from one person's homepage to another and discover completely random corners of the internet.

Now everything is sorted by recommendation systems. Convenient, sure, but it removed some of the fun of accidentally finding something amazing at 2 AM.

[Golden Tara]

The biggest thing I miss is ownership. A personal homepage was your little piece of the internet. Social media gives everyone a profile, but you are still building on someone else's platform.

There was a different feeling when you typed in a custom URL and knew every pixel on the page existed because you made it.

[Cognition]

The funniest part is that those personal pages were probably closer to the original idea of the web than many current websites. People sharing information directly with each other without worrying about algorithms.

A teenager making a page about their favourite movie had more freedom than many creators have now. It was a strange but fascinating time.

[Debbie]

Geocities had some truly awful design choices, but I would argue modern web design has its own problems. Endless cookie banners, autoplay videos, and pages that take forever to load are not exactly progress either

At least the old sites were honest about being chaotic. Nobody pretended the flashing rainbow text was a carefully engineered user experience.

[Peter94]

People who never experienced that era underestimate how much it taught technical skills. Want a different background? Learn some CSS. Want a guestbook? Figure out how it works. Want a cool button? Make one.

A lot of today's web developers probably started because they wanted to make a silly fan page at age 13. The motivation was different, but the learning process was real.
