A thread about the strange economics of advice. Tell us the piece of advice you dismissed at the time and now hand out to everyone who will listen, the wisdom you had to earn the hard way despite being told it plainly, and its opposite, the advice you dutifully followed that turned out to be wrong for you

The first half is almost universal, we are told the true things early and cannot hear them until experience translates the words into meaning, so the advice was never wrong, we were just not ready to receive it, and there is something humbling in becoming the very person who once said it to us

The second half is the more useful one and less discussed, plenty of confident standard advice is wrong for a lot of people, the one size fits all life rules that do not fit, and knowing which received wisdom you followed off a small cliff might save the next person the fall

So both please, the ignored advice you now evangelise and the taken advice you would take back, and the reflection underneath, why could you not hear the true thing when it was first said, because the answer is usually the actual lesson

Ignored save something every month from your first wage, heard it at 18, felt patronised, started fifteen years too late, now I bore every young person I meet with the exact sentence I rolled my eyes at

Pixel Dragon

The rolling of the eyes at the true thing is the universal experience, we cannot hear compound advice until we have personally lost the compounding, the words needed a decade of translation

Darren_34

Taken advice that was wrong, follow your passion, chased a passion into a career that killed the passion, the better advice was build a skill and keep the passion free, learned that expensively

Fan

Follow your passion is the most confidently given and most situationally wrong advice of our era, it works for a few and quietly ruins a lot, glad someone said it

ProperJobs89

Ignored be kind to people on the way up because you meet them on the way down, thought it was a threat, it is just true, the industry is tiny and memory is long, I preach it now

Kev49

Taken you must go to university for everything, followed it without question, the debt and the years suited some paths and absolutely not mine, the advice was a default nobody examined

BiscuitTin

Why could I not hear it, because advice is compressed experience and you cannot decompress it without the experience, the words are a receipt for a lesson you have not bought yet

ElPresidente

That is the best line on advice I have read, a receipt for a lesson you have not bought, explains the whole thread in one image

WaveFunction74

Ignored sleep is not optional, wore exhaustion as a badge for a decade, the body sent an invoice with interest, now I am the annoying one telling juniors to go home and rest

The pattern is that the ignored advice was always about the long game and young us only believed in the short one, we could not hear about compounding because we did not yet believe in later, later is where all the true advice pays out
