Is local news genuinely dying out in favour of national and global headlines?

Local newspapers and regional news outlets have been closing or shrinking at a genuinely alarming rate over the past couple of decades, squeezed by falling advertising revenue and audiences increasingly drawn toward national and international stories that dominate social media feeds and app notifications instead. The loss of dedicated local reporting means fewer people actually covering town council meetings, local court cases and community issues that rarely make it onto a national outlet's radar at all, even though these are often the stories with the most direct impact on someone's actual day to day life.

Some argue this decline is simply the natural result of changing consumer habits and a genuinely global media environment, and that expecting local news to survive unchanged in that environment is unrealistic, while others argue the loss represents a genuine democratic problem, since local accountability journalism catches corruption and mismanagement that would otherwise go completely unnoticed by anyone outside the immediate community.
