TechRadar put out a running list of what is actually working for people this summer, and the short version is fans first, air con second, and the UK still does not have nearly enough of either built into its housing stock

The BBC has already confirmed more anomalous hot days are on the way even though the second heatwave technically broke, so whatever setup you cobble together now is worth keeping rather than packing away

The bladeless Shark fan with the Air Blanket sleep setting keeps coming up as a genuine favourite, mainly because it does not have that horrible whirring blade sound that keeps light sleepers awake right when they finally start drifting off

For anyone without air con, the old trick of a bowl of ice in front of a regular fan still works surprisingly well, and pairing that with blocking the sun out from late morning onwards does more for a bedroom's temperature than people expect

A lot of the portable air conditioner options come with window kits now too, which stops warm air sneaking back in from outside and is apparently the detail most people forget when they first buy one
Come on Wales!

Genuinely the ice in front of a fan trick has saved my sleep this week, feels stupidly simple but it actually works

I caved and bought a proper portable air con unit and my only regret is not doing it three summers ago
Gunners for life.

Bladeless fans are so much better for sleeping, the noise difference alone is worth the extra cost if you are a light sleeper

Does anyone have a good setup for a room that only has one window, the through draught trick does not work for me at all
Question everything. Especially this.

The window kits are honestly the unsung hero of portable air con, I ignored mine for a year and was basically cooling the whole street

UK housing was not built for this and it shows, my Victorian terrace turns into an oven by 3pm every single day now

Closing curtains in the morning feels counterintuitive but it has made a bigger difference than any gadget I have bought

Bracing for a third heatwave this month if the Met Office forecast holds, better stock up on fans before everyone panic buys again
